I felt like I was getting into a bit of a choreographic rut doing much too much of the same sorts of things. So, I tried something new in rehearsal this week. To bring a new kind of movement I used some exercises inspired by what I learned in a master class with Pilobolus last semester. In the class they had us work in groups to move around the room. As we moved they gave us challenges, for example: only half of your group can touch the floor. This got everyone to work together to create truly unique movement to accomplish the task.
In my case, having the dancers attached to one another already is a huge challenge to work with. Rather than planning choreography ahead of time, I gave each dancer some elastic, asked them to attach it to their hand or foot and exchange the other end with another member of the group. Once this was settled, I told them the goal was to get from one corner of the room to the other. Check out this video of us playing with the results:
