1. Alwin Nikolais: Pond.
I first mentioned Alwin Nikolais when I wrote about his choreography Tensile Involvement. N
2. American Ballet Theater: We Insist.
Continuing the trend of building on previous posts, this is also a second time around for Zoe Keating's song "We Insist". I first found the song when I was looking for music for my choreography it was on a list with: Takenobu, Heimat, Build, Cello Fury, and Trace Bundy. Then it reappeared in my first inspirational videos post with Kerri Canedy's elastic choreography. Now, here it is again, this time for the lighting technique. I found this video in the list of recommended videos on my YouTube account and the thumbnail image immediately caught my attention. Having spots on the stage was part of my original plan way back in May. At that point I thought I would use the spots to have certain dancers come in and out of focus. Clearly, my plan has changed significantly since this pre-elastic point. At the end of the day it's also just an incredible dance to watch.
3. Everything So You Think You Can Dance...
In working on creating a video to play during the dance showcase performance I have been brainstorming ideas and good old SYTYCD has come to the rescue. SYTYCD frequently shows brief clips of rehearsals and interviews with the dancers and choreographers that tell the audience a little bit about the dance prior to performing it. While I am not sure if I will end up using this format for my video - it certainly served as a starting point to get some ideas flowing. ow that we are getting closer to the show I have for the most part shifted my focus to lighting. I thought Nikolais's choreography "Pond" had such dynamic and interesting lighting choices. I loved the way the dancers wore colors, which inspired me to paint the elastics my dancers are using. I am very excited to start working on lighting design Tuesday!
